Fraudsters circulate attractive advertisements, seeking to entice unsuspecting applicants to accommodation agency websites. Particularly in urban areas where such rental opportunities are rare, private individuals fall for this scam over and over again. The fraudsters contact applicants by SMS or e-mail and lure them on to what is called a phishing website. Such websites are not easily distinguishable from those of genuine agencies. Once the applicant has logged on, the fraudster requests personal data, passwords and card information. These allow him to access e-banking or other web services, or to sell the information on the dark net.
