Cyber criminals often try to scam their victims a second time after a successful rip-off. They keep lists of all the victims who they have successfully scammed in order to lure them into a second attempted fraud. This particularly nasty scam is called recovery scamming.
08.07.2025 –- In recovery scamming, criminals contact their fraud victims by phone, email or social media and promise to recover the lost money.
- They often pretend to be the police, a bank or a security company in order to gain the trust of their intended victim.
- However, they can only help, or so they pretend, in return for an advance payment, sensitive data such as card details or personal information.
- Now the trap snaps shut a second time: As soon as the scammers have what they want, they disappear again.
