Romance and scamming on Valentine’s Day

Hearts beat faster again on Valentine's Day. But be careful if you're on dating apps or social media: romance scamming is a popular confidence trick. Don't confuse warning signals with butterflies in your stomach.

11.02.2025 –

Fraudsters use dating platforms or social media channels to track down potential victims. They also adopt fake profiles to present themselves as charming people in order to build trust with their potential victims. They often tell heartbreaking stories to obtain money or credit card details.

Watch out for the following warning signals when chatting: fraudsters ask for financial help, for example for an emergency or for travel expenses. They exert time pressure and push for a quick transfer, access to your accounts or card information. They also avoid meeting in person.

Therefore you should always be wary if you are contacted by strangers. Never disclose your login or card details and report suspicious behaviour to the police.
