Time and again, innocent citizens receive e-mail messages threatening criminal proceedings against them if they don’t pay up.

The recipients are accused of having a proven record of viewing child pornography. Victims are taken in by the supposedly official nature of the blackmail attempt. Often this involves the use of police logos and stamps. This type of phishing message is also known as a fake extortion email.

Be on your guard; ignore emails threatening you with criminal prosecution. Don't be intimidated; contact the police if you are unsure.
