Shoulder surfing is when criminals surreptitiously look over your shoulder when you enter your PIN or access data – for example at an ATM, at the store check-out or on your smartphone.
11.08.2026 –They are often standing right behind you or filming discreetly with their mobile phones. But #Watch out: Snooping is only the first step. As soon as the perpetrators know the PIN, they try to steal the card or device so they can withdraw money or make payments.
Here’s how to protect yourself:
- Always conceal your PIN when entering it – with your hand, your wallet or your body.
- Mistrust people who come unusually close – especially at ATMs or check-outs.
- Be on your guard if someone tries to distract you by jostling or asking questions.
- Keep cards and smartphones safe, especially just after entering your PIN.
